FAMILY HOMES AND REHABILITATION CENTERS 2
In the history of human culture, society preferred living in family homes to rehabilitation
centers. Over 90% of people in the world live in family homes while the rest live in rehabilitation
centers. In ancient times, only situations could force people to leave family homes for
rehabilitation centers. Addiction to drugs, child abuse from guardians, and poor parental care are
some of the possible reasons for living in rehabilitation centers. Unlike the ancient rehabilitation
centers, modern rehabilitation centers offer holistic care and family therapy services
Family homes offer emotional support to its members. Emotional support is very
important in life especially when things are not working out. In a family home setup, the elderly
and young have depended on family members for emotional, financial, and health support
(Schulz, & Eden, 2019, p.6). Sudden changes such as retrenchment from a job, failed love
relationships, and loss of a loved one is likely to cause someone emotional distress. When such
cases arise, family members offer emotional support by listening to the affected member in a
supportive and non-judgmental way and offer the best solution possible. Sharing is the first step
to achieving a solution to the affected. However, some cases might too much for family
members’ therefore expert service from psychologists is sought by the family members. One of
the consequences of emotional distress is premature deaths through suicide. However,
psychological and emotional support from family members reduces emotional distress.
Family homes provide essential resources such as food, clothing, health, housing, and
education. Access to essential resources is vital for human beings living. The instrumental roles
of a family home to its members include the provision of food, shelter, and clothing while the
effective role is to offer emotional support (Crowe & Lyness, 201, p.187). Parents and guardians
should provide for the young ones and the elderly. Today, education and health is a need that
should be catered for by parents and guardians.

FAMILY HOMES AND REHABILITATION CENTERS 3
In the modern world, rehabilitation centers offer more than shelter, food, and clothing.
Today, rehabilitation centers focus on the provision of holistic care to the less fortunate and drug
addicts in society. Some of the holistic treatment activities offered in most rehabilitation centers
include hiking, gardening, and meditation which help people reduce stress. Furthermore, family
therapy is offered to assist people to get over the addiction. Rajan (2016) argued that modern
rehabilitation centers are designed to offer both family therapy and holistic care. The centers are
as good as family homes if not better.
Most people think that family homes are better than rehabilitation centers because family
homes all basic needs required for human being survival. However, the case is quite different
because rehabilitation centers offer more than basic needs ranging from family therapy and
holistic care. Modern rehabilitation centers is a home for the orphaned, employed, unemployed,
less fortunate, and emotionally distressed people in society.
