Please respond to the following: ( short answer)
The Homeland Security Act has been the subject of much scrutiny and criticism. From your own
experience, suggest two changes that could be made to security procedures to deter terrorism and
discuss their potential benefits. Speculate the threats to importing and exporting activities that
might exist if the changes you describe are not enacted.
Response
Importing/exporting into the United States only has three points of entry which include
marine, air, and land access through US borders. Although well protected, illegal activities are
prevalent, and however controversial the Homeland Security Act may seem, what other option is
there but to supply these areas with adequate security. Option one would be to increase
enforcement, significantly, so that importing/exporting inspection laws are thoroughly enforced.
Option two would include transparency through technology which would provide the public with
an additional understanding of the law enforcements practices. Both options may be financially
unfeasible, however, what is the nation’s security truly worth? The current situation is causing
much scrutiny and controversies already, implicating the Homeland Security Act, thus, what’s
the worst that can happen by increasing security for importing/exporting functions. Outside of
the formalities of legally importing and exporting, human trafficking and drug smuggling already
warrants increased security, thus, implementing both methods would suffice in addressing
importing and exporting of legal and illegal provisions.
