Crime Prevention Programs
Directions: Open a separate Microsoft
®
Word document and answer the
following questions. Each response must be 75 to 150 words in length. Post this
assignment as an attachment.
1. Why must the police implement community-based programs designed for
crime prevention? What do these programs provide for the community?
2. What are some of the challenges associated with the implementation of these
programs?
3. Identify three-crime prevention programs outlined in Ch. 9 you believe are
most effective. What are their advantages and disadvantages? Explain their
importance in crime prevention.
1. Although it is the duty of the police to serve the community and protect its
citizens, the police do not have the resources to stop crime alone.
Community based programs empower the people in the community to
become involved with the police and see their community as an interest
they can take part in protecting.
Initiating community programs and involving the citizens in these
programs provides a feeling of having a vested interest in the level of
safety in the community. The more people are involved, the more interest
they take in wanting a safe and peaceful community. These programs also
remove some of the weight from the police department in terms of having
more eyes watching in the community as well as helping to control costs
hiring more officers.

2. Some of the challenges facing the police with these programs,. Is the
community itself. Younger members of the community causing trouble in
the community due to no proper or productive use of time can represent a
challenge for the police getting youth involved in such programs.
Similarly, with the elderly, or one parent families, or perhaps families with a
dependent family member who requires constant care. These obstacles
present a challenge for the police in terms of finding sufficient people to
staff community-based programs. Involving the entire community is
important, but these challenges make forming, carrying out, and
continuing such programs difficult.
3. Crime Stoppers. This program has the advantage of involving citizens
anonymously as well as providing an incentive to report crime. The
disadvantage is that unless someone calls into Crime Stoppers, it is
completely ineffective.
D.A.R.E. This is a wonderful program I believe because it can reach the
younger generation and inform them of the dangers of drug use. It gives
the opportunity for adults and teenagers to communicate openly about this
issue and relay a true understanding of the implications of a drug related
lifestyle. A disadvantage is that the program does not reach enough

children, and many who are too young to be in a school where the
program is taught.
I believe it is a disadvantage for the program to not begin delivering the
program to younger than middle school children. In today’s society,
children face this challenge at much younger ages than previously.
Additionally, there is no way to ensure the continued effect of the program
when it is completed. This program, when coupled with concentrated
efforts beyond the programs completion would be very beneficial.
CERT is another program I believe would be very beneficial. Teaching
students to be able to assist in emergencies, and to be able to treat
smaller, other than life threatening injuries, is a two-fold positive action.
First, it can give students a feeling of empowerment in their community,
and it also ensures that there are people available in the event of an
emergency.
Teaching younger people to handle emergencies rationally, and giving
them knowledge and the ability to make a difference is empowering and
can point children in the right direction. I do not personally see any
disadvantage with this program. However, I imagine one possible
disadvantage could be the challenge of interesting youth’s in participating,
