An Analysis of “Formation” by Beyoncé
I. In her 2016 song, “Formation,” Beyoncé explicitly expresses black pride and the
significance of her roots and background to her life and the lives of other black
Americans.
II. Although not a part of the lyrics, the very first words uttered as “What happened after
New Orleans?” (Beyoncé 00:00:03-00:00:05).
III. The following lyrics focus on her work ethic followed by a call to action to women to
follow her lead.
IV. Throughout her song, Beyoncé presents many themes, but the two that stand out the most
are Black Lives Matter and black feminism.
V. While BLM is more so represented in the video, black feminism is represented in both
the video and the lyrics.
VI. While the themes presented in “Formation” are important in and of themselves, they gain
particular significance when analyzed in reference to the historical context from which
they are derived.
VII. In wearing the same style of dresses as white slave owners, Beyoncé is placing herself in
the position of those white women.
VIII. Despite eventually gaining equal rights, the social disparities between black and white
Americans, not to mention black and white women, still exist.
