Management information system is a computer-based system which provides managers with
tools to organize, plan, manage the departments in associate to an organization. This entails the
programs which prepares people to design and maintain the systems which collects and manages
data. Management information system (MIS) is probably an area of Information Technology
service (ITS) within division of information Technology and planning. Also management
information is the study of people, the organizations and the technology and preferably the
relationships among them (Boddy, 2008).
There are five primary keys which are put forward in management information. These
components include the hardware, software, procedures and the data. Considering the
procedures, the management information is basically performed in terms of design, development
and documentation. Therefore, the management information systems are considered to have
distinct from the other forms of information systems since management information entails the
utilization and the facilitation of the strategic and operational activities within the workplace of
an organization. According to academics, management information systems are a study of how
individuals, organizations and the groups evaluate, implements, manages and utilizes the systems
so as to generate information hence improving the efficient and effectiveness of organization’s
decision making Boddy, 2008).
The management information equips the business mangers with ideals in information they have
to make decisions and solve the problems as well as facilitating data from the different aspects of
a project. The earliest computers were used for easy operations like tracking inventory, sales,
billing and payroll data preferably with little details or even structure. The computer application
in management information system is basically considered to be more complex and previously
quite isolated applications like the system cards and magnetic storage (Wing, 2008).

Management information system in planning
The management information system has an ideal in applications by providing the managers with
information about the inventories, sales and much more other data which would assist in
managing the corporate, organization or the enterprises. The planning in management
information system is applied in application under broad areas like decision support systems the
human resource management, the enterprise resource planning or performance management and
the supply chain management together with customer management in relations and also the
project management. The management information system provides the detailed, summary, and
the exception to managers in all the activities (Boddy, 2008).
In management information system, there are five basic eras which correspond to five phases in
the development of the computing technology. These areas include the mainframe and
minicomputer computing, the personal computers, the client or server networks, the cloud
computing and the enterprise computing. In applications, the first era which is mainframe and
minicomputer is taken up to whole rooms and requires the tem to run them. As a result of
technology advancement, these computers are able to handle greater capacities and therefore
tend to reduce their cost in a relation to management (Garson, 199).
Therefore, the management system has a primarily responsibility for developing and maintaining
the integrated university-wide software applications which support the critical administrative
functions. The activities which are supported by the management information system include:
