Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was established as a self-proclaimed egalitarian and populist organization that was tasked with defending the revolution (Hesam & Afshin, 2017). It has been subject to little governmental and parliamentarian oversight since it is constitutionally accountable to the Supreme Leader. The self-proclaimed populist status rendered IRGC a key shareholder in the post-Khomeini Iran after the group's prohibition to getting involved in power struggles among Iran’s political power factions. IRGC’s politicized response to increased polarized factional infighting and the demand for change in the society has buttressed its economic stake. It also developed a forward-looking political role due to its internal security function in the moments of conflict. IRGC started promoting upward mobility within the conservative principalist camp taking advantage of its political role to assert a stance in the elite power struggle. This increasing political influence ensured faster ascendancy of IRGC authority in commercial business and financial network.
