NURS 316N Nursing Care for the Aging Population
Self-Reflection on Course 8 Outcomes
Course Student Learning Outcome
Self-Reflection Response on each Student
Learning Outcome
Holistic Care:
Assess clients holistically recognizing them as
members of a family, community, and global
society with unique physical, psychosocial
and spiritual issues.
Promote health and quality of life in the
older adult.
Recognize and manage geriatric problems.
Having developed a better understanding of
the holistic evaluation approach, I can
confidently conduct an organic, open, and non-
bias assessment, regardless of whether or not I
am aware of the patient's spiritual belief. An
increase in the life expectancy and health of all
the older adult people can be achieved
through the healthy promotion of activities,
including changes in eating habits. Early
identification of geriatric syndromes such as
osteoporosis will aid in geriatric disease
management.
Communication:
Communicate effectively, respectfully, and
compassionately using verbal, non-verbal,
and technology with older adults and their
families.
Facilitate interdisciplinary communication as
older adults' transition across and between
home, hospital, and nursing home, with a
particular focus on the use of technology.
From the course readings, I have deduced that
effective communication with older adults
involves slow talk, face-to-face sitting, eye
contact, and so forth. In addition, complete
information transfer between care providers
and adequate access to basic services is best
achieved through effective interdisciplinary
communication.
Critical Thinking:
Analyze the impact of the aging society on
the health care system.
Evaluate the relationship of the identified
maladaptive signs, symptoms and behaviors
and/or pathophysiology to the actual stressor
and related interventions.
Recognize that sensation and perception in
older adults are mediated by functional,
physical, cognitive, psychological, and social
changes.
Aging societies have different health care
requirements than younger groups, which
affects the health system's demands.
Psychosocial procedures that I have learned in
the course have been proven to be useful in
the treatment of stressful diseases and can
influence the course of chronic diseases. Some
of the factors I have learned that could be
modified to ensure optimal cognitive
functioning in old age include exercise and
avoiding smoking.
Nursing Process:
Develop a nursing plan of care in
collaboration with other members of the
health care team taking into consideration
the needs, desires, strengths, weaknesses
and safety concerns of the older adult and
family.
Evaluate and modify the plan of care based
on assessment data and evidence-based
practice.
I have also gained knowledge on collaboration
in developing a nursing plan of care that aids in
improving patient outcomes, for example, the
reduction of preventable adverse drug
reactions, decreases in morbidity and mortality
rates, as well as the optimization of the
dosages of medicines, and a focus on EBP.

Nursing Roles:
Incorporate into practice valid and reliable
tools to assess the functional, physical,
cognitive, psychological, social, and spiritual
status of older adults.
Facilitate older adult's active participation in
all aspects of their health care.
Provide education, prevent or reduce
common risk factors that contribute to
functional decline, impaired quality of life,
and excess disability in older adults.
Identify community resources in assisting
older adults with their health care needs.
The Katz ADL scale and the Lawton IADL scale
are two instruments for the evaluation of ADL
and IADL. I have gained skills on ADL and IADL
deficits that can signal that the patient's social
and environmental situation needs to be
assessed in greater depth and that further
assistance is required. I have also deduced that
an active healthcare role can also enhance
patients' quality of care, effectiveness, and
health outcomes. Based on knowledge learned
through the course, functional decline
prevention involves a healthy diet, regular
exercise, managing chronic conditions, and
generally being active. Also, a powerful aging
network for home care is made up of
community health and social services
departments as well as local aging offices and
care centers.
Ethics:
Uphold standards of practice set forth by the
ANA Code of Ethics, Standards of Nursing
Practice, and the state Nurse Practice Act.
Apply ethical and legal principles to the
complex issues that arise in care of older
adults.
Identify the values and principles governing
the practice of professional nursing including
the ANA Code of Ethics, Standards of Nursing
Practice and the state Nurse Practice Act.
Establish and follow standards of care to
recognize and report elder mistreatment.
Insightful knowledge on ethical issues has
allowed me to uphold a competent level of
care, as demonstrated by the critical thinking
model known as the care process, including
assessment components, diagnosis, and
identification of results, planning,
implementation, and assessment.
Furthermore, I have gained insights into the
use of ethical values such as respect for the
dignity, value and human rights of all persons
and ensuring a suitable system and standards
of care for elderly people.
Research and Evidence-based Practice:
Demonstrate ability to use evidence and
collaborate with other disciplines to provide
comprehensive care with older adults.
Apply evidence-based standards to promote
healthy activities in older adults.
From the course readings, it was evident to me
that, using evidence while at the same time
integrating other disciplines heightens the
delivery of comprehensive care for older
adults. Using the relevant sources, I can now
incorporate evidence when to enhance healthy
activities in older adults. For instance,
introducing physical activities and healthy
eating diets can improve older adult’s overall
health.
Life-long Learning and Personal and
Professional Growth:
Demonstrate continued growth in the
attributes of a professional nurse through
refinement of a knowledge base and client
care skills.
I have learned that proof of quality
characteristics such as empathy, versatility,
and respect can be used to achieve the best
possible level of care for the elderly. The
nursing philosophy knowledge I have gained
captures intrinsic beliefs and goals in the
