Thermodynamic Concepts: Convection, Conduction, Radiation COLUMBIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY UNIT VII 2018/2019  Heat (q) represents the thermal energy which is transferred from hot -> cold systems which are in contact. (Wolfs,2010)  Hot objects in cold room = ↓ their temperature  Cold objects in hot room = ↑ their temperature Question: What would happen with a hot cup of coffee left on the desk in this room? What about an ice cream? Answer: Due to heat exchange, the cup of coffee will decrease its temperature until it reaches the environment temperature while the ice cream -> melt -> liquid which will increase its temperature.  There are three major methods through which heat transfers: 1. Conduction (via direct contact) 2. Convection (via fluid) 3. Radiation ( via electromagnetic radiation) 1. Conduction  Represents the transfer of heat energy by direct contact between particles of an object.  It is the transfer of the thermal energy without involving any movement of the object.  If you take a metal strip and heat it at one end, you will notice that the particles will start to vibrate and make the particles adjacent to it vibrate too. As vibration is passed along the metal so is heat which results in the other hand getting hot too. (Hyperphysics,2016) 1. Conduction Example of conduction: metal spoon left in a pot of water which is boiling Step 1: Particles of the fire which move fast collide with the particles of the pot which is c ...
