CAREER PATHS IN ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS
An information system is a system put in place to collect, store, and process information which is
ultimately used by end users. (AccountingTools, 2017). Therefore one could say that an accounting
information system is a system put in place that will collect, store and process accounting and
financial information so that end users such as employees, customers, management and investors
can make decisions based on the output information. In this age of advanced use of digital
technology, a majority of information systems more especially in the corporate world are
computerized and this applies to accounting information systems as well.
There are various career paths in this field such as that of a management consultant, systems
analyst, auditor, accounting clerk and forensic accounting. Out of all these paths, the one that
interests me the most is that of forensic accounting which has been described by Staff Writers
(2020), as a career that involves the use of auditing and investigative skills to find out if there is
any distrustful financial action going on. It is a career path that investigates instances of money
laundering, tax evasion and insolvencies.
This career path interests me because of two main reasons. Firstly, I enjoy probing stuff,
questioning and finding the link between things. Secondly, I enjoy analyzing financial figures and
explaining such figures to people in terms of what they mean for that particular group. Both these
qualities, I believe are strongly suited for such a career and as such it will allow me to utilize these
qualities. In addition, I am currently working in the Telecommunications industry so I believe the
skills and knowledge I am gaining will greatly help me as a lot of crimes these days are being
committed through the use of technology.
One great thing about this career path is that it is high demand and there will be for some years as
cases of financial fraudulent activities are high and there are few local individuals sufficiently
qualified to take on these cases. In addition, the country is moving towards a knowledge based
economy which will open up even more opportunities for forensic accountants.
