Go to the Globe. Locate Bosnia & Herzegovina (in Europe). Take a look at the
photographs and find the link for the Mostar Bridge.
What impact does this bridge have on the intercultural communication of
the people living on either side of it?
Answer: The Mostar bridge features a classic Ottoman design and has been
a symbol of the Bosnian war. Otherwise, it serves as a symbol of friendship
which connected Muslim communities in the Eastern part with Christian
communities in the West. This has also represented the different ethnicities in
Bosnia so when it got destroyed by a tank fire in 1993, the locals were deeply
affected by its destruction. The bridge was reconstructed in 2004 and became
a sign of hope and a new beginning. The rebuilt Old Bridge and the Old City
of Mostar became a symbol of diversity, reconcialiation, and international
cooperation.
What section of the reading is applied to this exampledefine that section
from the reading.
Answer: The reading was informative and gave me sufficient information on
the bridge itself.
Summarize the link about the Mostar Bridge.
Answer: Mostar is the largest city in what is now Herzegovina, located on the
banks of the great Neretva River. During Ottoman authority from 1482 to 1878,
the town developed in significance, and many beautiful and notable Islamic
structures were created, including the Kara Ozbegora Mosque. According to
legend, following a series of unsuccessful bridges, the Ottoman Sultan
threatened to execute engineer Mimar Hayruddin if his bridge failed as well.
Hayruddin had already began digging his own tomb the day the bridge's
wooden supports were scheduled to be removed in 1566 when he learned the

bridge had survived. It would survive Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule, as
well as two world wars, for another 429 years.
The bridge was rebuilt after the war, with many of the original limestone
stones retrieved from the river. The reopening of the bridge by Prince Charles
in 2004 was both symbolic and a sign that life was gradually returning to
normal, as well as a monument to the city's residents' resilience and
perseverance. The Old Bridge region, with its pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman,
Mediterranean, and western European architectural traits, is an outstanding
example of a multicultural urban settlement, according to UNESCO, which
included the bridge to their World Heritage list in 2005. Mostar's renovated
Old Bridge and Old City are symbols of peace, international cooperation, and
the coexistence of various cults.
Question 2
Movie Clip
You have just viewed a scene from "The Last Samurai" starring Tom Cruise. Tom
Cruise's character (Nathan Algren) is a captain in the US army in 1876. He is asked
to go to Japan and train Japanese soldiers to use modern weapons. He is captured
in battle and lives in a small remote village in the mountains of Japan. Here he is
exposed to the traditions of the samurai (such as loyalty to one's master, self
discipline and respectful, ethical behavior). After many months he embraces the
culture of the samurai and adopts it as his own.
The scene you just viewed is at the end of the film. The Japanese soldiers won a
battle using modern guns and cannons (provided by Americans). The samurai's skill
with swords was no match for these modern weapons.
The text discusses the ethics behind intercultural contact. As the world
modernizes, cultural traditions may be left behind. What ethical dilemmas
come into play in this situation?
Answer: When Nathan (Tom Cruise’s character) got captured and was
brought to Japan, he was exposed to Japanese culture such as the use of
samurai in combat. This is quite new to him because he was trained to use
modern weapons such as guns. As we know, samurais are ancient swords
that were used back in the old Japanese times. The ethical dilemma that
plays into this scene would be the conflicting sides the character has. Nathan
doesn’t know if he should be loyal to what he has learned before while he is
also fascinated by the use of samurais.
