NURSING THEORIES AND COMPETENCIES Nursing theories and core competencies Name: Institution: 1 NURSING THEORIES AND COMPETENCIES 2 The ‘need theory’ The 'need theory' commonly referred to as 'the nightingale of modern nursing,’' developed by Virginia Henderson closely relates to my beliefs in nursing. She emphasized the need to increase the independence of clients or patients (Schlotfeldt, 1960). She wanted the clients in question to be independent over time so that when discharged from the care-giving units, they could go ahead with the recovery. Additionally, she highlighted that the necessary care-giving activities of the nurse are assisting the individual who is either sick or well, in performing activities which contribute to their health. The events could lead to recovery or if the patient does not survive, ensure they have a peaceful death (Schlotfeldt, 1960). The main goal of helping in these activities is to provide rapid recovery or gain independence rapidly. In helping the patients, nurses need to be patient and try to understand what they need. It is necessary to put oneself in the patient's body to understand the desired requirements. In this profession, I believe that nurses should try and help the patients recover or in turn regain independence faster than usual.
