Primary Sources

Primary sources offer a way into the past historic events that shaped the current

contemporary world. People who lived during that era give access to their archives where they

have stored the historical data that the modern world finds appalling to listen to or read. In the

event of delivering information, a couple of words may be omitted to give emphasis on the

subject matter not necessarily in other sources alone, but also in primary sources. Despite this,

primary sources provide firsthand information on the history of the world which opens the minds

of the young generation of what it was like to be alive in such times (Barton, 746). It gives an

unparalleled understanding of the reasons people behind the choices people made as well as a

concise picture of the circumstances they faced.

In addition, primary sources assist students to gain critical analytical skills. In reading

and evaluating the primary sources, students develop a keen and thoughtful ideological mind in

order to comprehend the information contained in the sources. This is necessary since most of

the documents preserved from history are often incomplete and as such, the students need to be

able to find the join the links to fully understand the context. Furthermore, it is more engaging in

that through reading these primary sources, the students can relate more to the people who lived

in the past at a personal level. In turn, it gives them the urge to seek more information on the

subject so at to get a deeper understanding thereby promoting active reading in students (Barton,

744).

Archival resources are my ideal primary sources. They present a channel to the past in an

unprejudiced way that is captivating to any reader. A few copies of archival resources are found

and therefore it makes them a more reliable source of historic times and events. This is given the

fact that they are preserved and therefore give limited access to editing. Moreover, many of the

documents in archival sources are unpublished since they were written in privacy and were not

meant for the public. Therefore they contain explicit information on the historical events which

makes them my favorite primary sources.
