RUNNING HEAD: AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON HOSPITALS
Implications of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on Hospitals
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed by president Obama in 2010 as a
major health care reform policy in the United States. The prime purpose of this act is to provide
better quality treatment and to expand the domain of healthcare facilities to more people in the
lowest prices and better accessibility of the healthcare to the general public regardless of their
economic conditions. The act emphasized on the importance of health as the basic right of every
American. The Federal government lowered the prices of medical facilities in healthcare
organizations and decided to fund the hospitals from the federal tax collected funds to provide
healthcare facilities to consumers [Rosenbaum, S. (2011)].
Although legislative authorities have struggled to cover every aspect and implication of
the ACA but it will have major organizational changes in the hospitals in the fields of quality,
cost, and managerial functions. As the number of consumers will increase in the patients due to
reduced costs of facilities and insurance coverage to the uninsured, it will overburden the
physicians, nurses and other medical departments to take care of the more patients with the same
workforce. The functions of management will increase due to increased number of patients.
Management staff will have to deal with increased medical record entries, treatment schedules,
and human resource training and development issues. The ACA reduces the costs for insurances
and treatments and as a consequence, the hospitals will receive less money for increased patient
treatment which will make it more difficult for hospitals to manage all the departments in
reduced budget and increased workload. The hospitals will need more technology and machines
to operate and function for more patients which will cost the management a huge fortune of
money which is not being practically catered by the governmental officials [Dubois, S. (2013)].
