IT managers at St. Luke’s recognize wireless networking as an important strategy to improve patient care and increase clinician productivity. However, IT executives should realize that installing a large-scale wireless network is a major undertaking for any healthcare organizations because of the difficulties that face large-scale wireless deployment. The security of health data is a major difficulty that IT managers at St. Luke’s are likely to experience when it comes to wireless networking. Deploying wireless networks without considering security jeopardizes patients’ privacy (Xiao, Lin, Du & Chen, 2008). Wi-Fi waves are open to public connections, and therefore, intruders can connect to the network, posing security concerns to the network. When intruders connect to the network, they access confidential patient data and leakage of such data could result in an individual losing his or her job or making it challenging to acquire insurance protection. Additionally, wireless networks cover a wide range of the health system’s applications such as physiological data monitoring by different departments.
