The prince gets more respect if his servants appear to be competent, honest and trustworthy. Machiavelli views that the first impression of a prince is very crucial. Though this is true, it is ironical that the prince’s impression is judged by the behavior of his servants and not by his own behavior. This means that if his servants are competent and loyal the prince is seen as wise because they believe he was able to recognize the best from his flock and gain their loyalty and trust. Therefore, Machiavelli meant that if a prince’s servants are good the prince will be seen as good. Therefore, a proper selection of the correct secretary to execute the will of the prince would ultimately portray the price as competent or incompetent.
