Strengths Based Approach Culturally and Linguistically diverse populations Name: Course: 1 Institution: Date: Strengths based approach in cultural and language diversity 2  Starting school is a major life transition for children and their families which can be both exciting and challenging.  The strength-based approach is an approach to people that views situations realistically and looks for opportunities to complement and support existing strengths and capacities as opposed to focusing on, and staying with, the problem or concern.  In relation to culture and diversity, it is viewing students in terms of what they can do in relation to their culture and diversity and not what they cannot do.  Despite the children being culturally and linguistically diverse, the ECDE teachers have a role to play ensuring the children are at the right state of mind. Not feeling lonely, unequal or different.  All children have strengths they portray in their early childhood, this approach requires the teachers or guides to identify them as early as possible. Developing the child having known their strengths gives confidence to the children, they feel treated equally to the others and removes the aspect of them being different.  Home language is key, Hakuta and Garcia argued in 1998 that knowing more than one language is a cognitive asset.
