CheckPoint: TOOLWIRE: Identifying Threats to Network Security (Response) 2
The STRIDE threat model is actually very new to me. I have never heard of it
until I participated in this Toolwire. After taking the lesson in the Toolwire, I called an IT
friend of mine and he actually had heard of it, however, I was really having a hard time
understanding this idea. After I completed the lab a second time and after speaking to
my friend, I fully understand the idea and the importance of it. The method is basically
an acronym that has each letter of STRIDE representing some kind of threat that can
attack a system. The way I have looked at it is that there are numerous threats that can
be associated with each separate idea. I believe the way to learn this method is by
remembering what each letter represents and how each can be broken down:
Spoofing identity
Tampering with data
Repudiation
Information Disclosure
Denial of servied, and finally
Elevation of privileges
Simply by following the simple acronym of STRIDE, I was able to remember and
begin to learn these ideas and I think I will now be able to look at each idea in a more
thorough light to use it in the future. In addition to the introduction and reading the
notes on the side of the actual lab, I really do appreciate the hands-on type of learning
experience. This is definitely an excellent way for me to learn. The only issue I was
having a problem with was if I had actually completed the whole lab. At the very end of
the toolwire, it asks you to print out a report of what you had completed. It was
confusing to me because when I read that I was supposed to present my report on

some kind of a white board, I was not aware that I actually had done this. After I
realized that this notion of using a “white board” had not been done, in my opinion, I was
tempted to call the toolwire support line I finally gave up on this and when I had gone
through it a 2
nd
time and ended at the same place, I have decided that even though I did
not get to present on a virtual white board, this was an awesome experience and I love
doing a hands-on learning experience!! I have often found that I learn better with
hands-on rather than watching it. I just learn better doing it this way!!!
