Article Evaluation
The interpretation of research is very important for social scientists. Social scientists
perform research for various reasons and needs. Some of the reasons include to create new
knowledge and understand phenomena. It is also important to understand the context of the
researchers understanding. The methodologies, paradigms and decisions that social scientists
choose when performing research affects how they interpret the results and how the results
can be applied. For the assignment, the focus will be on analyzing a study by “Eckstein
(2016) titled IPV stigma and its social management: The roles of relationship-type, abuse-
type, and victims' sex”. The article details a study that sought to determine how the type of
relationship, abuse and the victim’s sex affect the stigma related to IPV and how it can be
controlled.
The paradigm applied in the article is the social constructionism. Social
constructionism involves the idea that the truth is not constant. Researchers that sue the
paradigm believe that the truth changes based on time and people among other factors. Also,
the truth is constructed by the society. Therefore, what may be true to on society or people
may not necessarily hold among other people. Therefore, when studying phenomena, it is
important to consider the society studied as the findings may not be applied to all other
people. Also, what may be true currently among a social group may not be true later. From
the perspective, researchers study factors while considering factors like the time, the
particular group and other factors that may be involved.
Several aspects of the study exemplify the social constructionism paradigm. First, the
author directly applies identify is formed through the re-enactment of certain identity aspects
over time until the identity becomes permanent. The author describes identities as products
of structural forces as well as groups that people belong to (Eckstein, 2016, p.215).
Therefore, the author also says the terms victim and abuser may have varied meanings
