In at least 250 words (total):
(1) Identify at least TWO stakeholders for the problem of honeybee colony collapse disorder.
(a) Explain why you think that these are stakeholders for this problem.
(2) In the case of honeybee microbial genome engineering explained by Paxton, the proposed
action is to use genome editing to engineer honeybee microbiomes to make them more resilient
to parasites and pathogens. With this in mind, do the following:
(a) Identify ONE cost for this proposed action, and explain why you believe that this is a cost.
(b) Identify ONE benefit for this proposed action, and explain why you believe that this is a
benefit.
(c) State whether you think that we should undertake the proposed action, and explain why.
The honeybee colony collapse disorder highly affects the farms and consumers. The crops
that the consumers buy are from the farms, and pollinators are essential for the farms. These
pollinators increase the production of fruits and crops by spreading the pollen and increasing the
chance of success in reproduction. The farmers in the honey industry will also be affected if the
decrease in the population of bees continues. The consumers will experience an increase in the
price as the stock reduces and the demand increases. It will make the agricultural products less
accessible and affordable for the consumers.
The proposed action by Paxton will use genome editing to make the western honey bee
(Apis mellifera) resilient to parasites and pathogens. This proposal will make the farmers grab this
option. Even though some studies show success, we cannot assure that this genetically
engineered honey bee will not encounter unexpected effects. It is alarming because of the effects
that genome editing can be heritable. Any unforeseen problems can cause a more significant
impact on the honey bee population. On the other hand, this action is also beneficial because it
will help the honey bees to increase their population. It will increase their survival rate, and more
bees will pollinate. Thus, raising the number of crops and fruits that the farms will produce.
