EDUC103 & TEDU111: Education, Culture and Society. Course Outline: Semester Two, 2021 Course Description This course provides an introduction to theories, concepts and processes in the study of education. The course identifies and questions dominant ideas and explores a range of theories about power, justice and fairness in society, with a particular focus on how they relate to education. Drawing on local as well as international examples, the course examines some of the impacts of social, political and cultural factors in maintaining unequal forms of education. An important feature of the course will be analysing the role played by education in the development of colonial relations between Māori and Pakeha, and how that continues to shape contemporary New Zealand society. With its bicultural emphasis, EDUC103 is listed on Schedule C of the BA degree, one course from which must be included in every BA student’s programme of study.
