A family can be defined as an association or a unit in which two or more people are connected in several ways such as blood relations, living together as well as supporting each other in numerous ways (Benokraitis, 2014). Families may be made up of married couples with their children or adopted ones. Over the past years, a number of trends have been witnessed in the family setup and structure. There is a clear distinction between the old families and the new ones. Major changes witnessed in the family structure revolve around the social, cultural and economic characteristics (LeBey, 2001). Putting into consideration all the changes within the family structure over the years, I am of the opinion that new families are better than the old families. Socio-Cultural and Economic Characteristics Thought to be Weaknesses of the New Families The old families have been described as having placed priority on confinement of individuals to one place, a factor that was thought to provide unity within the family.
