Choose an organisation with which you are familiar. Your chosen organisation has

employed you as a consultant. Your brief is to write a 2,500 - 3,000 word management

report.

The report should:

• Briefly provide background information about the organisation.

• Critically analyse how the organisation currently manages and co-ordinates projects in

order to ensure the best possible outcomes.

• Evaluate how the organisation uses qualitative and quantitative data to support

decision-making by project managers and/or project management offices.

• Make focused recommendations to enable the organisation to more effectively

manage its projects in the future.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate an understanding of current Project Management approaches, including:

o An awareness of traditional project management methodologies (PMBOK and

Prince 2).

o An appreciation of the project manager as a disturbance handler and problem

solver.

o Ensuring project process acts as a balance between managing risk, achieving

sustainability and providing a vehicle of opportunity.

• Reflect on and critique their own experience in organisations

• Appreciate the commercial and behavioural issues in the management of projects

Your End of Module Project should be submitted in a report format and have a word

count of between 2,500 and 3,000 words.

• Unit 1: An Introduction to Project Management

Welcome to Week 1 which will focus on defining the concepts of ‘project’, ‘project

management’ and ‘data-driven project management’ which reflects the utilisation of data

analytics in project management. Projects can be used to achieve many things from planning

a social function, to building an Olympic Park and Village. Whilst all projects may be

focused, time specific and unique, what they seek to achieve and the environment within

which they are being implemented can vary, greatly. It would be naive to assume therefore

that a ‘one size fits all’ approach can be taken to project management. Consequently, we

shall consider contextual factors including the implications of current and future

technologies by using the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a contextual framework. In doing

this we shall consider a range of factors including: the implications of sector (e.g. private

versus non-profit), geography (e.g. local, regional, trans-national projects), and the

technologies/software needed to support remote collaboration in an increasingly globalised

world. We shall also consider the implications of joint ventures and partnerships for inter-

organisation collaborative projects. You will be introduced to some of the principal

methodologies for managing projects. This will provide the foundation for a more detailed

consideration of project methodologies in week 2.

In this unit we shall:

• Determine what a project is and why we have ‘projects’.

• Define and explain the concept of project management and introduce you to the role and

skills of a project managers.

• Consider different project environments and explore a range of contextual factors

including technological developments Define the concept of data-driven project

management and introduce you to the role of data analytics in project management.

• Introduce you to the concept of project life cycles and the role of project methodologies.

On completion of this unit you will be able to:

• Identify what a project is.

• Define and explain the concept of project management and the role of a project manager.

• Define and explain the concept of data-driven project management, and appreciate the

role of data analytics in project management.

• Explain the implications of context for the determination and design of projects.

• Demonstrate an appreciation of project lifecycles and methodologies.

• Appreciate some of the technologies/software needed to support remote collaboration.
