Teacher Self Efficacy and Burnouts
Issue of Concern
The proficiency and efficiency of teachers is directly linked to their physical and emotional
well-being, as well as the individual teachers self-efficacy.
Are the well-being and lack of self-efficacy of teachers a contributing factors of burnout
syndrome?
Description of Research method and the Design
The research method devised in order to tackle the issue at hand was a questionnaire. This
questionnaire consists of two parts.
1. The first one was devised off of a model developed by Maslach and Jackson (1981),
that was used to determine teacher burnouts.
2. The second was taken from work done by Tschannen-Moran and Woolfolk (2001)
that addressed the first half of the issue, self-efficacy within teachers.
From these questionnaires a survey design method was created based off the correlational
research and results of the questionnaire. The questionnaires took information from a
population of teachers within Gaziantep, Turkey. The population size was 163 taken between
the 2014-2015 academic years.
The results of the survey can be summarised within the table below:

A correlational design model is often used to show a connection between two variables. This
type of design model is used for quantitative variables, as shown within this survey.
Important Findings
After the analysis of data through the calculation of correlations, means and hierarchical
regression analysis, provided by Savas, Bozgevik & Eser (2014), it was observed that
teachers showed the greatest self-efficacy in the management of classes. An unforeseen
outcome of the questionnaire shows that teachers reported being worn-out as opposed to
experiencing burnout.
Burnout: This is a reaction to chronic stress, which leads to mental as well as physical
exhaustion.
When describes themselves as being worn-out they are in a state of extreme physical fatigue.
However, teachers with low self-efficacy did report that they found themselves being burnt-
out, so to say.
In Conclusion
This research showed that there is a direct correlation between teachers with low self-efficacy
experiencing burnout as opposed to their counterparts who possessed high self-efficacy.
As a direct result of this, an improvement in teacher self-efficacy will result in a drastic
improvement in teacher efficiency as well as proficiency. An improvement in teacher
efficiency will lead to an improvement in classroom performance.
However, in order to improve the quality of results a qualitative survey will need to
accompany the quantitative one.
