The COVID-19 fiscal response and
India’s standing
How does India compare in the quantity and quality of its COVID-19 response
to other developing countries?
India must improve COVID-19 funding support and reconstruction", April 18, 2020 by
drawing on International Monetary Fund Policy Tracker, COVID-19 Cheyhun Elgin's
Economic Stimulus Index (CESI) at Columbia University, and the World Bank.Prior to the
announcement of the Atmanirbhar Bharat package, India lagged far behind in developing
countries with similar GDP per capita, state power, and labor structure. Since the beginning
of July, the gap seems to have narrowed.Atmanirbhar's total amount is charged at 10% of
GDP. The main number of Indian financial responses to international reserves is about 4% of
GDP. But we and others have estimated that the new cash flow, including Pradhan Mantri
Garib Kalyan Yojana, in March, the specific financial aspects of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and the
recent increase in free shares under the Public Distribution System, is about 1.7% of GDP.
The only significant intervention on the demand side of the Atmanirbhar Bharat package
was Rs. Most of the alternatives include pre-loading, consolidation, or refund of existing
funds - for example, recently announced ₹ 50,000 crore Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan, which
covers 12 departmental / department projects.the level of relief efforts does not appear to
be related to the economic downturn and disintegration caused by the closure of the
closure. Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan and Egypt, despite having stronger measures than
those in India, have announced major or major recovery measures, as part of GDP.World
Bank list of 621 steps in 173 countries, half of which was based on funding. Much more is
related to food aid (23%) or deregulation / reversal of financial obligations (25%). Only 2%
are related to public works, which clearly shows the popularity of money transfer over
public income support services, perhaps in part due to concerns about physical distance.
One example of this is Mexico, which has announced the expansion of its permanent rural
employment program for 200,000 farmers and beneficiaries. Indonesia has allocated more
than $ 1 billion (over 7,000 crore) to fund community service programs that will benefit at
least 600,000 workers.
