In this form, the reporting relationships are set up as a grid rather than the normal traditional hierarchy structure. In other words, employees in a matrix organization have a dual reporting relationship; report to a functional manager as well as to product manager; where they report their performance to the product manager whose has power across different departments and still reports to the head of their department who have power down all departments.
