Introduction
Strategic leadership and decision making skills can make a person or group of people
move towards reaching a common goal. Strategic leaders should know how to deal with people
from different cultures within organizations, schools, at home, and in any gathering. In our case,
we review how strategic leadership and crisis decisions made by the captain, the copilot, training
instructor, and the senior flight attendant in United Airways Flight 232 DC 10 helped to save
lives of many passengers.
The plane crash took place on 19th July, 1989 when the plane was headed to Philadelphia
from Denver, and it was passing through Chicago. The plane had 296 passengers and the
incidence left 185 survivors and the rest (111) fatalities. The four members played a key role in
ensuring that they saved lives. We will look at the personal profile of Captain Al Haynes and
DC-10 flight training instructor, Denny Fitch.
Captain Al Haynes
He is a former pilot for airline born on 4th January, 1932 in Texas. He attended Woodrow
Wilson High School in Texas, where he graduated in the year 1948. Al Haynes later joined A&M
University in Texas and entered training for Navy flights. The captain can be described as a duty
fulfiller. He is a responsible and dependable person. His power of concentration and cooperation
with other crew members enable them to achieve their goal (International Association of
Wildland Fire, 2003).
DC-10 flight training instructor, Denny Fitch
He was born in 19th December, 1942 and died in 7th May, 2012. He was a pilot in
American commercial airline and became famous for helping Captain Al Haynes to minimize the
