Introduction
Recovery and support groups sometimes are paired with other strategies to improve the chances
of a successful outcome in the treatment of substance use disorders. This paper outlines the
attendance of a 12-Step Narcotics Anonymous meeting along with examples from individuals
with substance use disorder, their Recovery Goals, and the benefits acquired from participation.
It also outlines activities that an addiction counselor can do with a client to follow up on the
event and determine what was learned from the meeting experience.
Attending the Meeting
I attended a Narcotics Anonymous online meeting due to the current Covid-19 pandemic.
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an organization, that helps people with substance abuse disorders
(SUD) find a spot where they can have constructive social interaction with people with the same
disorder. NA provides a secure space for SUD people to express themselves openly in a non-
judgmental atmosphere with their peers. NA, like many other self-help recovery groups, is
merely a continuation of the healing process. Counselors for substance use disorders give
treatment programs and counseling to assist SUD clients in preparing for the long road to
recovery and changing bad habits. NA meetings are usually open meetings where individuals
suffering from SUD and general people are allowed to attend including non-members.
Structure of Group Meeting
The meeting was designed to meet the needs of the participants in the best way possible. The
format of the group meeting was engaging, fun, and easy to follow. Nevertheless, the Counselors
