Running head: HISTORY 1 History of African Americans and Southern Whites Freedom Name of student Institution Affiliation Date African Americans And Southern Whites 2 1) According to the blacks, freedom was self-ownership, family stability, religious liberty, political participation i.e. taking part in voting and contesting during elections periods, economic opportunity and living a normal life together with their families. Their ideas of it were based on what they had seen and how they saw whites live. This made them believe that once they achieve all the privileges and rights that were accorded to the whites they would have achieved freedom. The Southern Whites freedom was seen as a birthright that needs to be defended and was to be passed over from one generation to the other. From the destruction of their homes, properties and investments as a result of the war. This was a major catastrophe to them and when the war ended they felt relief from the consequences. Thus according to them, they viewed freedom as being in a peaceful country free of wars which claimed lives and destruction of properties. 2) There is a major difference in the way the two groups viewed freedom as one perceived it as achieving the life the other group lives. Life of privileges, owning land, farms, voting rights among others while the other group refers to freedom as living in a war-free zone from the oppression, poverty and destruction of properties it brings.
