Praxis – Reading Test Study Guide
Question Types
There are several types of questions. They will take the same
“shape,” whether in practice tests, or on test day. Being familiar
with the types will help you answer them without panic. There
will NOT BE any surprise question types on the actual test.
Remember that you are NOT being tested on your speci#c
knowledge. You are being tested on your skills. The more you
know about the test format and the strategies to approach that
format, the better you will do.
Make these strategies automatic through practice.
Here are the types of questions you will encounter in practice
tests and on test day.
Literal Comprehension Question Types
1. Main Idea Questions – These ask you to identify the main topic of
the passage, or part of the passage. This does NOT include opinion or
what you may think. What is the author trying to get at? Why did the
author write this?
The primary purpose of this passage is…
Which of the following describes the main idea of the
passage?
Find the central idea of the passage to answer these questions. It may
not be stated directly, but will be in the passage.
2. Supporting Detail Questions – These ask you to identify the
evidence, supporting information, and the like. The details the author
uses MAY include his or her opinions, facts, his or her experiences, or
discussions.
Which of the following details is not found in the passage?
To explain ________, in the passage, the author writes….
Which of the following does the author use to support the
main idea?
These will usually include statements or summaries of statements from
the passage. Sometimes an answer choice includes details you know
to be true, but those details are not found in the passage. Eliminate
those choices. The correct answer will be found in the passage only.
