Globally, Muslim’s two major denominations include the Shiite and the Sunni. These two
denominations drifted after the death of Muhammad who was a prophet in the Islam movement.
The disagreement came about on the succession of Muhammad where both groups presented
their suitable candidate. Historically, this disagreement went on for a long time causing the death
of Ali together with his family. Ali was Shia’s most preferred candidate and his death called for
more disputes resulting to revenge. All Muslim groups have a religious believe in Quran but in
hadith is where they draw the line since they possess different opinions.
The Sunni are many compared to Shiite according to research where they form 85% of
the world’s Muslim population the rest being Shiite. Violence is the main characteristic of the
two groups especially in the Muslim dominated states such as Saudi Arabia and Iran.
However, there is escalated tension among these groups brought forth by different
Islamic views which later brings power struggle amongst communities such as Iraq war, Bahrain
uprising and Syrian civil war. In result, Syria and Islamic state of Iraq formed hence the launch
of genocide against the Shias. All in all, the political tension experienced in most Islamic states is
as a result of the disagreement experienced between the Sunni and Shiite.
