What is the historical context for Machiavelli's text? Explain what makes that historical context important. The historical context of Machiavelli's text is the aspect of principalities. Many states at early times (as at 14 century) derived their powers from principalities which in this case refers to the countries being ruled by a prince. Usually, these principalities were relatively small states or states which fell within a large state such as an empire, Machiavelli (2006). It also refers to the position or authority of a chief ruler or a prince and their sovereignty/supreme power. The historical context of principalities in Machiavelli's text is essential since it points out and describes the various states together with their princes during the period between the 14th and 17th century. Also, the historical context also explains how these principalities were acquired. According to Machiavelli (2006), the principalities were either hereditary where families had a long establishment in the Republic, or they were new. The new principalities could be either purely new for instance the Milan to Francesco Sforza or they could be members who were appropriated to the prince’ inherited republic who had already assimilated them for example in the case of the Kingdom of Naplesto that of the King of Spain.
