The book Stigma: Notes on the management of spoiled identity by Erving Goffman examines how people protect their identities when they depart from standards of behaviour, appearance or anything which seem not right to a society. This is what causes people to conceal themselves to manage the impression they brought to the people to avoid the feeling ashamed. Goffman mentioned three types of stigmas in the book; the first one is the abominations of the body which target people who have a disability, obesity, and deform. Second is the blemishes of character which refers to flaws of individual character perceived as a weak will, domineering, or unnatural passions, like a mental disorder, imprisonment, addiction, alcoholism, homosexuality. It is easier to hide because they are not on the body. The last one is tribal stigma which refers to the skin colour, race, and ethnicity being termed as not “suit” for the society (Goffman, p4). The story began when I was diagnosed with depression at the age of fourteen. One year later, I was diagnosed with anxiety and bipolar disorder.
