Communication styles and the Business communication process 2
Discuss the content of the conversation. What was communicated in the conversation,
and who were the communicators?
Recently I had an interpersonal communication with a colleague regarding
Information Technology team effectiveness and productivity. The discussion was about what
is causing a decrease in quality of Information Technology service in the IT lab. Problems
that were found included week WiFi signals, delay in processing of complaints and problems
with the communication with the IT lab management.
The discussion was joined by one of our group members and a lab assistant as well. I
and Hanna, a group member were already discussing before the new members joined us. All
of us were unhappy because of the complaints we had and the conversation mostly consisted
of sorting out the cause of problem and seeking solutions.
Which style best describes the method of communication you and the other person used
throughout the conversation? Explain why you selected those styles.
There are many styles of communication. Broadly these styles are any combination of
clear or masked and direct or indirect. In our conversation we all belonged to almost same par
level so we had a clear and direct conversation. Clear and direct communication is that one
which is most simple and common form of communication. This style is used when the
message is less crucial, plain and stated directly to the people involved. Since we had IT lab
assistant with us in the conversation, the communication became direct. The complaint was
directed clearly towards the member of IT team.
The style was selected because there was no senior member to whom we were talking
neither the issue involved any politics or sensitive issues therefore we found it convenient to
discuss openly, clearly and in plain tone.
How would the conversation have been different if you had used each of the
different styles of communication? Explain each style and how the conversation would
have been affected due to the differences.
There are three other styles that could be used for interpersonal communication in a
business sitting. These styles applied to the same sitting are discussed below:
