Name Institution Date  The Phineas Gage accident is among the earliest recognized cases of serious brain injury  Gage suffered significant changes of personality following the brain trauma  His situation lead to the study of neurology  He is thus a legend in the history of neurology.    Gage was a foreman leading a crew of construction workers in paving the way for a proposed railroad track pathway On September 13th 1848, Gage and his crew were working at the Burlington and Rutland railroad in Vermont Gage was involved in accident, when a glint ignited the explosive powder by mistake, propelling a tamping iron through his skull.  In the beginning, Gage’s reasoning was not affected at all by the trauma (Harlow, 1848)  Personality changes began to occur after 20 years  At work he became irrelevant and fitful, indulging in gross profanity  Lack of self moderation when advised against his ideas.  He lost his left eye  He became partially blind  The injury affected his reasoning  He suffered total loss of social reserve, which often caused him to behave inappropriately.  In 1848, there was no breakthrough in the field of neurology  He did not receive any special medical treatment  His physician only helped to remove the bone fragments that from his brain  He also cleaned out pus from Gage’s brain.    Phineas Gage’s case made a very significant contribution to the e ...
