Student’s Name
Smarter Decision Making through
Psychology
August 4, 2020
Using what you have learned about the adolescent brain and social development in Chapter 3
of the webtext, answer the questions below to help Gloria understand why her son is making
such poor choices, and pose some recommendations to help her solve her problem. (Use page
3.4 for brain development and page 3.6 for social development.)
For each question, you should write a paragraph-length response (57 sentences) to receive
credit for this assignment. You may use your Soomo webtext as a resource.
Question 1: What are three physical changes that happen to teen brains that make it difficult for
someone like Gary to weigh risk and reward? Write a paragraph to list the changes and
describe how they affect decision making.
For teens, brain development is a very critical aspect of the adolescence. There several
physical changes to the brain that trigger the intrigues and challenges that teens like Gary bring
to their close family members. Brain maturation is the underlying phenomenon behind the
physical changes of the brain during adolescence. Neural plasticity is one of the significant
physical brain changes that is caused by acquisition of new skills (Best & Ban, 2021). Through
this change, they become more prone to making inappropriate decisions. The second change is
the development of frontal lobes which reshape the teen’s language, judgment, social behavior
and initiation capacity. The other change is prefrontal cortex growth that is highly implicated
drug-seeking demeanors during adolescence.
Question 2: In addition to their brains changing, teens change socially. What do teens wrestle
with as they develop socially? Why may Gary value his peers more than his mom? Write a
paragraph that describes teens’ social development and how this may influence Gary’s decision
to sneak out and go to the party.
As they develop socially, teens wrestle a number of forces. One of the forces they
wrestle is negative communication. Their beliefs and perceptions on life circumstances are
different from their seniors and they end up struggling with communication woes that can easily
translate to stress and conflict just like Gary and his mother (Myers, 2019). They also face the

pressure to conform to the acceptable norms that are parallel with their emotional development
stage. Gary may value his peers more than his mother because they speak from the same
understanding and communication of issues (Shetgiri, Lee, Tillitski, Wilson, & Flores, 2015).
When together with his peers, he is able to manifest and openly show the same levels of
independence and a common ground of reasoning.
Question 3: What are two specific strategies or pieces of advice that you would recommend
that Gloria can offer to help her son to make better decisions? Write a paragraph that offers
advice that would help Gloria with her son’s development as he improves his decision-making
skills.
One of the best strategies for Gloria to use while communicating and advising her son is
validation of their feelings. This strategy helps in downplaying their disappointments with the
touch of empathizing with their mistakes. Validating his feelings ensures that he does not feel
dismissed while sharing with his mother. Another imperative strategy is strong emotions control.
As sometimes the teen may be rude, tempers may flare (Myers, 2019). However, with a strong
control of emotions, responding in kindness becomes the norm and when pressures swell
always hit the pause button.
Question 4: Place yourself in Gloria’s shoes. How do you think Gloria is feeling? How can
understanding her feelings help you offer constructive advice? Write a paragraph where you
describe how you think Gloria is feeling and explain why understanding her feelings allows you
to offer more effective advice.
As a parent, Gloria is automatically disguised by the actions of his son. She is also
facing intrusive questions that are lingering her mind. Gloria is also disappointed by her son’s
bad company and poor decision making. However, as a parent the most difficult time is when
the child can make decisions and act on his or her own. The only best way to face the challenge
is recollecting herself and bringing her son closer to her through doing things together and
making quality time to talk, watch and share topics that can positively trigger a sense of
understanding and making right decisions (Kim B. & White K., 2018).
