The role of La Clave in Salsa timing La clave is the key of the timing in Salsa music. The instrument, a pair of short, thick sticks, between 8 and 12 inches long, typically made from rosewood, ebony or grenadilla. Claves are very important percussion instruments and one of the most accessible. They are used to help children understand rhythm since a very early age.
