It is vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, landslides and droughts. The state is considered as the third most exposed to extreme weather conditions regarding the impacts of disasters in the economy and the number of lives that are lost. It is estimated that more than 96% of the population lives under the risk of hazards, with 56% of the GDP of the country being linked to regions that are exposed to more than two hazards (Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, 2017). On January 2010, Haiti was struck by an earthquake of 7.3 magnitudes. More than 200, 000 people lost their lives with the country sustaining damages and losses that were equivalent to 120% of the GDP.
