Psychotropic Medications
Psychotropic Medications are various drugs used to alter individuals' behaviour, moods,
thoughts, or perception, mostly in older adults. This name refers to various drugs; for instance,
there are a collection of Psychotropic drugs such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs,
stimulants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers. Psychiatric Disorders have been prevalent and
have become one of the significant public health concerns (Semahegn et al., 2020). Such drugs
sometimes have very adverse side effects, especially on the elderly, and one of the primary
reasons for such side effects is non-adherence to them. These drugs tend to have a series of side
effects on the individuals that they are prescribed to. The side effects vary in different ranges and
intensities depending on the individual and the nature of the illness. Common side effects
include; feeling dizzy or drowsy after using such drugs, feeling confused, sometimes
accompanied by loss of balance, memory loss, reduced blood pressure, and respiratory
complications. Most of these drugs are addictive, and therefore long-term use is not advised.
As people grow older, they become more and more sensitive to drugs and other forms of
medication. This is the main reason why older adults are more likely to register side effects of
medications than younger people. Therefore, this population needs to be administered with lower
dosages of Psychotropic Medications to reduce side effects. Older people experience the worst
forms of side effects, and at the same time, they are more likely to have health-related problems
and complications compared to when they were younger. When they take Psychotropic
Medications with other drugs, they can develop higher risks of adult falls or other movement-
related side effects. Some of the side effects are developed when adults use such medications for
a very long time. The most vulnerable are women who are twice as likely to develop
complications and experience adverse side effects than males.
