Rats in New York City
There is a dire need for Pied Piper, a rat-catcher hired by the New York City to lure
away with his magic pipe. When the citizenry refuses to pay for this service, he retaliates by
turning his power that he put in his instrument on their children, leading them away as he had
the rats, but thankfully that is not the case to be as the New York citizens are in the state of
emergency as they would want to get rid of rat menace. There is a stat which says that one
pair of rats can multiply up to 200 times in just one year, now just take a pause and give a
thought with countless number of rats in city, what level of destructions they can make in one
year, just one word – chaotic. They are adept at climbing, swimming, somehow working their
way through a serpentine of sewer pipes. Our focus over here is to identify the rat behaviour
and find out means and ways to curb their populations and concrete steps to be taken from the
Local municipality and fellow citizens. The rodents bring with them many diseases such as
Lyme disease (Rodent tick bite), Salmonella (Rodent faeces contamination), Hantavirus (In
faeces, urine, body fluids), Plague (Rodent flea bite or by handling an infected animal) etc.
There are two sections of societies in NYC who are dearly suffering, one being common
public and other sections are the shop keepers who are the heart of the society and they have
been harassed by rodents and causing huge economical losses annually.
First of all we need to track the main source of living for the rats and how do we cut
their supplies which will make their life difficult to survive and thus reduce the population.
Rodents like to live in the neighbourhood where general public live and they can thrive on
just once ounce of food and water daily, so when they enter neighbourhood, they have the
easy access to fish, meat, vegetables and grains, they are bound to stay here and inject
diseases all around. They prefer to feed in and around homes, restaurants and businesses and
eventually settle for scraps from trash bags and cans, private yards and where they find that
the general community has disposed off the garbage / leftovers. Rats get the shelter they need

from tall weeds and grass, fences and walls, rubbish piles and abandoned appliances. As per
my view, we have to work diligently on waste management which will snatch away their food
which is the prime source. The Rats and mice breed very fast as I have mentioned in the
introduction of this article. A mouse can have several young when she is two months old.
Then after two months, her young ones will breed and in the mean time the mother will
produce another litter, so we must keep working to get rid of them. Initial steps will be to
keep garbage in tightly covered cans which is of metal / hard plastic or which cannot be
chewed by rodents. If you have pets such as Dogs and Cats in a dish, then we need to clean
the leftovers and then it will be then food for rats and mice, so clean it up on priority basis.
Look for the typical homes of rats which we create for them such as to remove trash, old
board, weeds, junk cars and machinery which is outdated as this can be their perfect home to
live and for breeding. Take care of and wood piles against the house as it is easy for rodents
to make a hole and live here. Stack fire woods 18 inches off the ground and away from all
buildings. Cover the windows with screens. About one forth inch or smaller mesh will keep
rats and mice out. Keep floor drains tightly sealed as rodents have the capacity to enter homes
through sewer pipes. Mice can get through any hole that will admit the tip of your little
finger. Seal small holes and cracks by stuffing them with stainless steel scouring pads, then
caulk over them. Always remember – The sinks, cabinets should have a flush against the wall
and also have moving appliances so that you can clean walls behind them. I.e. There should
be minimum fixed appliances and also make sure that you have enough space through which
you can clean the back side of it, this will deter rats to make their living behind fixed
appliances. High grass or weeds sometimes provide cosy and more private environment for
rats to burrow. Maintain lawns at no more than 4 to 6 inches in height. In houses rats live in
the insulation of walls or ceilings, inside crawl spaces, behind or under cupboards, counters,
bathtubs and shower stalls, Near hot water heaters and furnaces, in basements, attics and
