Tao 1 Alicia Tao International Writing Workshop II Professor Schwartz October 10, 2018 The Sunken Place Never Goes Away Get Out is a film directed by Jordan Peele and that focuses on the high prevalence of racism in modern US societies. At a family gathering, Chris, a black photographer and the main actor, is meeting his girlfriend Rose Armitage’s white parents, Dean and Missy, and her brother Jeremy. They try to be overly “friendly” with Chris through using slang and the attempt to connect random black people. One of these is Dean’s insistence in bringing up his love for Obama and saying he would have voted him in for another term if he could. Dean also asks how long he and his daughter have been “doin’ this thaaaang” when trying to get to the bottom of their relationship. Instead of making Chris feels at home, their words are discomforting. The way the Armitage family behaves reflects the dehumanizing ways that white people can act when attempting to find a common ground. Later that first night, Chris is talked into a hypnotherapy session with Missy as a way of helping him quit his smoking habits, and he recounts the horrifying death of his mother in an accident when he was a child, which he feels guilty and sinks into a void calls the Sunken Place. From Missy’s hypocritical lie to cure his nicotine addiction, Chris is hypnotized, helpless and powerless under her control. Chris is "sunken" any time he entrusts his wellbeing to the white people in this film. ...
