The recession takes place in the areas of industrial production, employment, real income, and wholesale trade. The technical indicator of an economic recession is a negative economic growth for two consecutive quarters as evidenced by the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The financial stocks were the starting point of the U.S Great Recession which resulted from financial mischief from the 1980s and the real estate bubble burst in 2007. The recession is a human created tragedy that has a high human cost. This was in 2007 when the increase in debt funds caused the financial market to be on the verge of free fall. While avoiding "free fall", the collapse of the subprime mortgage sector and the dominance of billions of dollars in loans, insurance markets, and mortgage-backed securities led to a catastrophic collapse of the economy. Ironically, however, for most Americans, the employed affected by the meltdown had to bear a heavy burden in addition to saving the system from "free fall” (The Economist (2008).
