MICROBIOLOGY
The Importance of Microbiology
Most populous (many) and diverse group of organisms
Found everywhere on the planet (earth)
Play a major role in recycling essential elements
Is a source of nutrients (at the base of all ecological food webs) and some carry
out photosynthesis
Benefit society by their production of food, beverages, antibiotics and vitamins
Some cause disease in plants and animals
Why Study Microbiology?
Impact on human life
Decomposers
Microbes are ubiquitous: soil, water, ice cap, hot vents, body
Extremely adaptable
Simple models to study biological processes
Francesco Redi (1668)
In 1668, Francesco Redi, an Italian physician, did an experiment with files and wide-
mouth jars containing meat
Redi’s Experiment
In the middle of the 17
th
century, the Italian scientist Francesco Redi noticed and
described the different developmental forms of flies
Redi observed that tiny wormlike maggots turned into sturdy oval cases, from
which flies eventually emerge.
He also observed that maggots seemed to appear where adult flies had previously
landed.
In 1668, Redi proposed a different hypothesis: that maggots came from eggs that
flies laid on meat.
Rudolf Virchow 1858- challenged the notion with his theory of “BIOGENESIS”,
claiming “all cells come from preexisting cells.”
Although correct in his concept he lacked the experimentation to prove it..
