Week 3 DQ 1
Describe the fundamental principles of servant leadership. Present two qualities of servant leadership
and explain how they support interprofessional communication in providing patient care.
According to GCU (2018), the aim of a servant-leader is for the growth, and well-being of the people and
the community. The servant leaders primary focus is to serve, which is then followed by the desire to
lead, which differs from that of leader-centered approaches. Their services to their followers is through
guidance and mentor-ship in order to fulfill an organization's mission, whereas the leader-centered
approaches begin with establishing mission success, then focus on building followers in order to prosper
(Gandolfi, Stone, & Deno, 2017). Servant leadership has proven to contribute to the success of
organizations. Employees have been found to be more satisfied with their positions and display more
commitment to an organization when servant leadership is practiced (Irving & Berndt, 2017). Also, this
type of leaders puts the needs of others first, forsaking personal advancement and reward and assist
individuals to develop and improve their performance.
The ability to become a good listener is one of the quality a servant leader should posses because
communication begins with listening. Effective communication promotes employee performance and
encourage positive outcomes by providing genuine feedback. Staff and patients who feel supported are
more likely to attain their goals and achieve high-quality outcomes. Servant leaders have the ability to
hear what others are saying and read their body language through verbal and non verbal
communication and reflect upon it to enable them lead their group to full potential (GCU,
2018). Servant-leaders has to realize that their words, actions, decisions and methodologies help to
create the company’s true values and its culture (Allen et al., 2016).
Being empathetic is a crucial part of being a servant leader by understanding and sharing the feelings of
the followers places the leader in a position in the followers circle. Servant leaders are able to identify
the characteristics that make each individual unique and provide them with the ability to understand
how best to support and lead their followers to achieve success in the mission (GCU, 2018). The leaders
may not always accept the performance or actions of followers, the leader always accepts each follower
as an individual.
