Describe the characteristics of performance-driven team. Describe the difference between intrinsic
and extrinsic motivation and explain why it is important in understanding the types of motivation
when it comes to team performance.
.
A performance- driven team is one where all team members work together towards a mutual goal or
expectations. The team should set a specific and realistic goal. All members of the team will have
different skillsets and ideas, this requires open communication so that all members are heard and
respected. A performance-driven team should be able to collaborate while having defined roles and
responsibilities. This ensures every member of the team is contributing and has the opportunity to
participate and provide insight. All of these characteristics are important when working with a team, but
trust and respect should take priority. All of these characteristics stem from the motivation of the team
as individuals and as a whole. “Motivation occurs when needs are met. This is the foundation of
Maslow's hierarchy of needs, where self-actualization occurs in one's life only when physiological
factors, safety, belongingness, and esteem are all achieved” (Thomas, 2020). Motivation to reach a goal
can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes from within a person. It is rewarding to the
individual and is satisfying to them. Extrinsic motivation is the incentive to conquer a goal to receive an
external reward. Extrinsic motivation does not satisfy psychological needs and focuses on the outcome
and the reward. Understanding the different types of motivation is important when it comes to team
performance. Leaders and team members must understand how each member works and what
motivates them as individuals to reach the same goal.
