Fort Worth, Texas is located in the North Central portion of Texas and is no stranger to critical
hazards and natural disasters. Making sure Fort Worth is properly staffed with emergency personnel,
business leaders, who will work together to identify risk and use mitigation efforts and incidents is
extremely important. There are multiple critical infrastructures are located throughout the city of Fort
Worth, all of which present risks and opportunities to ensure the safety and survivability of the
community and the residents.
Fort Worth is approximately 355 square miles, it is the fifth largest city in Texas and the 13
th
largest city in the United States. In the mid 1800’s it was an Army outpost that overlooked the Trinity
River. Fort Worth has a full-time population of approximately 910,000 people. It has a hot and humid
climate with a diverse amount of weather events that includes tornadoes, snow, and rain.
Fort Worth, Texas will need to comprise a large planning team that is made up of business
owners, governmental officials as well as emergency and first responders. This committee will include
first responders from all over the community to include firefighters, and law enforcement officials to keep
peace and order. Along those lines, hospital workers and environmental agencies will be included in the
planning and mitigation agenda.
Drought happens on an annual basis. The physical vulnerability is that a drought can do severe
damage to a community. Without rain, crops can be damaged or not grow at all which can cause a
shortage in food. This can cause social discomfort on people because they have to be cautious on how
much they buy which can be financially binding. Each county is responsible for monitoring its own
drought conditions and putting measures into place to prevent them from getting worse and to prevent
other hazards such as wildfires. Burn bans can be put into place by each county in the event that a
drought becomes too severe to prevent fires from spreading and creating a bigger hazard.
Tornadoes occur every year and are very unpredictable. The physical vulnerabilities are that
tornadoes can be unpredictable at times and can cause wide-spread damage depending on the severity of
