Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Malaria in Children in Nigeria
INTRODUCTION
Background
Malaria, a notable ancient danger to our health, remains a major cause of international
morbidity and mortality (Abdulkadir et al., 2015). For instance, the globe’s malaria report of
2016 stated that two hundred and twelve million cases and four hundred and twenty-nine deaths
were put down in 2015. Out of all those deaths, two-thirds happened among less than five years
kids in Africa (Rosenthal et al,2019) Approximately twenty-five percent of malaria burden in
Africa has happened in Nigeria, where malaria brought about sixty percent outpatients and thirty
percent of hospital admissions.(Adigun et al.,2015) Mostly, clients encounter non-particular
symptoms like chills, rigors, and fever (Crutcher,1996). Chronic malaria establishes majorly
among kids and might manifest as impaired consciousness, extreme weakness, convulsions,
hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, and anemia, among other symptoms. (Buck, Finnigan, 2021)
Many kids with malaria in Nigeria are treated at home. These treatments are mostly
incorrect; this is because of the nurse’s poor knowledge of correct and appropriate doses of
medications (Ibeh et al.,2005). Research indicates that in Nigeria, the primary method for
minimizing childhood mortality and morbidity is the presumptive treatment of all fevers in kids
under 5-years with the help of antimalarial medications (Shretta,Cotter,2017). This practice
aligns with WHO's proposal for endemic nations where the availability and usage of labs are
limited. (WHO,2021) Activities to control malaria in Nigeria are planned and then set up via
PHC or Primary Health Care. Nigeria established its first National Malaria Control Policy in
1996.(Amoran,2013) The prevalence of malaria in kids here has demanded better diagnostic and
management of malaria.
