Several social media platforms exist among them Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Blogs. The social media platforms are becoming an integral part of communication for the youth and other sections of the population globally (Underwood & Ehrenreich, 2017). The young people are particularly enthusiastic users with most of them engaging in the use of social media daily through their computers or mobile phones. Therefore, social media has had effects on the lives of persons and has affected the manner in which daily lives are lived each day. The research in the area of social media remains a growing area. The impacts dominate the policy development section of the media. In this paper, the effects of social media as a communication tool will be explored. Three main areas of focus will be on the mental health of persons, impacts on education and how it aids in criminal activities. The paper hence will look at the negative and positive impacts that the social media has on the society.
