Part I Observation and Summary
Education is crucial in determining the future of children across the globe. Children
living with different forms of disabilities require special attention to maximize their educational
potential. I visited a special education environment in an elementary school setting and interacted
with both the learners and their teachers for this task. Notably, I interacted with a 9-year-old
student, Mike, in grade three in an elementary school. Mike has an Orthopedic impairment,
hence cannot effectively move around within the school. This medical condition makes Mike
uncomfortable while undertaking his learning activities. Due to the adverse effects of the health
problem on his behavior and general conduct, Mike is placed in a resource classroom, where he
gets specialized instruction and academic assistance to match his fellows.
After observing the student, I realized that he has significant functional skills deficits. For
instance, Mike could not move independently, requiring a close individual always to provide aid
whenever he wanted to move. Additionally, the student had developed poor social skills due to
previous experiences and stigmatization. During my visit to the learning institution, the teacher
was teaching a mathematics topic on addition. Mike was receiving one-on-one coaching because
he had missed the lesson in previous weeks while attending his routine clinic. Even though the
student appeared entirely engaged in the class, it was evident that his morale was down. At some
point, the teacher made some jokes, but Mike could not even smile. After the teacher questioned
why he appeared so demoralized, Mike revealed that he struggled to capture the concept that
never seemed to add up to him.
Mike revealed a unique behavior problem. Even though the teacher did not report any
issues with Mike's mental health, he (Mike) appeared mentally struggling to interact with me. A
nine-year-old individual should be capable of self-explanation and interaction with people.
