What are the advantages and disadvantages of the creative side of Google being run as a ‘flexible and flat “technocracy”’? Since its inception, Google has dominated the internet search engine industry for its development of an incredibly powerful internet search engine. Other than this, Google has been credited with introducing innovative and novel technological products in the market which has made it the market leader in its specialty. In doing so, Google is run as a flexible and flat organization which has various advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages of the way Google is run is that it encourages creativity and innovation. By being divided into small units, Google has been able to promote and encourage innovation. Schilling (2016) note that working in small units makes a firm more organized focused, and flexible. As a flexible and flat organization, Google is able to leverage its units to come up with innovative products which have kept the company in the pole position. Compared to large centralized firms, Schilling (2016) note that decentralized firms may be better able to respond to some types of technological or environmental change because not all decisions need to be passed up the hierarchy to top management; employees at lower levels are empowered to make decisions and changes independently and thus may be able to act more quickly.
