An avid reader of the passage by Schargel can find the entire discussion a bit less
appealing one. The basic theme of the write up is related to altering the dropout age of students
in different states of the United States. The entire discussion is based on President Obama’s
proposal of rendering responsibility to the state authorities to look into the issue that students in
every state stay in school until they turn 18. The very intent of President Obama has been
conveyed through the first line of the excerpt and the proposal made by Obama to boost up the
graduation rate in the nation is definitely an issue to support. I am of the opinion that due to some
basic flaws the suggestion or the opinion that has been conveyed through the passage cannot be
termed as acceptable. Primarily I beg to differ from the writers point of view that the school
dropout rate should not be extended to 18, and this is because the writer has failed to provide
appropriate evidences to support his claim. And in this relation I must mention that the excerpt
has halted far away on a position that can hardly be considered as persuasive. All the basic three
elements of persuasion are absent in the argument forwarded by the writer. The absence of ethos,
pathos, and logos, has actually rendered a void to the argument forwarded by the writer. First of
all the writer has failed to establish the credibility of nullifying the proposal of President Obama.
To counter the proposal of the president the writer should have provided some credible facts but
he has confined himself to the economic arena of the subject matter and has claimed that the
dropout age of students should not be increased as it will increase financial burden on the schools
as it is an extra expenditure to bear students who are unwilling to stay in schools for few years
more. I defer to the view of the writer because if schools and their policies along with their
processes of teaching can be developed and can be tailored according to the actual need of the
students then students should start liking to carry on with their education. Moreover, if a student
is unwilling to continue in a particular school then, apart from any economic reason, the failure

of the teachers of the school to motivate the student should also be counted. Furthermore, the
void of the element of logos has actually turned the passage into a mere write up with no factual
basis. The writer has failed to provide any logic behind rejecting the idea of increasing the
dropout age and due to this simultaneously he has failed to comply with the noble effort of the
U.S. administration to motivate students to accomplish their graduation degree which is very
much needed to enhance the future workforce of the country. If students stay more in the school,
they can grow an inclination towards higher studies and this can ultimately, motivate them to
secure higher degrees. And with a qualified workforce of the future this country can surely
prosper more. So, here also we may see that the writer has failed to appeal to the emotion of the
reader as for the latter the dream of a United States with a qualified workforce working for the
entire betterment of the nation is more viable than letting students left the school early and to
remain abstained from education forever in their life. It is not viable to comment that students
who are unwilling to continue with school education at the age of 16 will actually disagree with
the notion of staying in school for two more years. If the teaching strategies of the schools are up
to the mark and if determination is there on the part of the school administrators and teachers to
strengthen the academic base of this country, then students should be more willing to acquire
school education till 18 and then aspire to achieve higher degrees eventually.
